Current affairs is not a subject

General studies papers rarely test whether a candidate has read the news. They test whether a candidate can say what an event is an example of, and an event with nothing behind it is neither retrievable nor transferable.

The category error

Preparation timetables list current affairs beside history, geography and economy, as though it were a fifth body of knowledge with contents of its own. It is not. History is a subject because it has objects that persist: state formation, revenue systems, the causes of famine. Current affairs has no objects of its own. It is a stream of instances, each belonging somewhere else. A bilateral agreement is an instance of a standing question in international relations. A rate decision is an instance of monetary policy. A court ruling is an instance of constitutional doctrine. Treated as a subject, the stream has no boundary and no order, which is why reading it never feels finished.

The error has a visible symptom. A candidate who has kept six months of notes can often produce the fact and still miss the question, which was set at the level of the idea while the notes were kept at the level of the event. The raw material is public, identical for everyone in the hall. The discriminating step is not access to the event but the ability to name what the event exemplifies.

Papers repeat concepts, not items

This is easiest to see where the record is long enough to count. Across 8,267 authentic JEE Main questions from 2002 to 2025, 117 topics carry enough questions to describe a stable pattern: 48 in Physics, 41 in Chemistry, 28 in Mathematics. Matrices and determinants account for 8.8 per cent of recent JEE Main Mathematics, 275 questions across the archive. Kinematics in one and two dimensions accounts for 6.6 per cent of recent Physics, 180 questions. Coordination compounds account for 8.7 per cent of recent Chemistry, 171 questions. No individual question comes back. The concepts come back relentlessly.

No serious candidate for a technical paper revises by memorising last year's particular problems, because those problems will not return. The same candidate, preparing general studies, will often revise by memorising last month's particular events. The two habits are one habit. Only one of them is widely recognised as a mistake.

Memory holds structures, not fragments

Frederic Bartlett established in the 1930s that recall is reconstructive: people remember by fitting material to a structure they already hold, and material that fits nothing is distorted or lost. Chase and Simon's 1973 chess experiments sharpened the point. Masters reproduced board positions far better than novices when the pieces stood in configurations that could arise in a game, and lost that advantage entirely when the pieces were scattered at random. The difference was not a better memory for detail but the availability of meaningful units in which to store it.

Bransford and Johnson showed in 1972 that a passage of ordinary English becomes both comprehensible and memorable once a title supplies the context, and stays close to unrecallable without one. The words do not change. What changes is whether a structure exists to receive them. An event read with no concept behind it is that passage without its title: perfectly legible on the day, gone within the week.

Events are evidence for claims

An event attached to a concept becomes reachable by many routes. A currency swap arrangement, filed under exchange rate management, can be reached from a question about reserves, about trade settlement, or about the country concerned. Left unattached, the same fact is reachable only through the month in which it was read, a route no question offers.

Attachment also does what no amount of coverage can do, which is to prepare for the event that has not happened yet. A candidate who has understood one subsidy dispute as an instance of a general problem in trade rules can answer about a different dispute, in another sector, in a year whose news has not yet been written. A candidate who has memorised the dispute can answer about that dispute. Examiners set the second kind of question occasionally and the first kind constantly.

The arithmetic of a half-known question

Partial knowledge has a measurable price. In UPSC Prelims the negative marking produces a break-even accuracy of 25 per cent, which is exactly the expectation of a blind pick among four options, so guessing there is neutral on average. NEET and JEE Main break even at 20 per cent, which makes a blind pick mildly positive. In every case the marks come from moving above chance, and the mechanism for doing so is elimination.

Elimination is a conceptual act. Ruling out an option because it contradicts how a mechanism works requires possession of the mechanism. It cannot be done from a stored headline, which either matches the question as asked or does not. This is why two candidates who have read the same material perform very differently. One answers from a list of remembered items. The other answers from a few understood mechanisms, each carrying several remembered items behind it.

A compilation only lengthens

The practical consequence concerns the shape of revision. A monthly compilation grows without limit: every month adds to what must be revised and nothing is retired, which is the arithmetic behind the familiar panic of the final weeks. Concepts behave differently. They are finite, largely stable from year to year, and each new instance that attaches to one makes it sturdier rather than longer.

The corresponding method is unglamorous. An item worth keeping should acquire a parent idea before it is filed, and the test is whether the item can be stated as an example of something. Items that resist that test are usually not worth keeping. Revision then runs downwards from the concept, recalling its instances rather than rereading them, since Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments established that attempting recall retains markedly better than repeated study of the same passage. Two well-attached instances of one idea are worth more in the hall than twenty loose items, and cost less time to hold.
