The claim that software will make coaching institutes obsolete is made most often by the people selling software. The defensible position is narrower, and worth stating plainly: a data platform and a teacher are good at different things, and the evidence indicates which is which.
The strong version runs as follows. Information was once scarce and expensive, coaching institutes sold access to it, and now that lectures, notes and solved papers cost nothing, the institute has nothing left to sell. The premise is sound. The conclusion does not follow. Free content has been abundant in India for over a decade and enrolment at the large centres did not fall, which suggests something other than information was being bought.
That something is easy to name and hard to build. A class imposes a schedule nobody had to invent. It puts a person in the room who notices an empty seat. It surrounds a seventeen-year-old with others who are working, which does more for attendance than any notification. It supplies a teacher who has watched thousands of candidates fail in a small number of recognisable ways. None of that is an information problem, and none of it is solved by a better database.
Benjamin Bloom's 1984 comparison of one-to-one tutoring with ordinary class teaching, the study behind the two-sigma figure, is cited to argue that personalised software will beat the classroom. The tutors' actual method is quoted less often. They caught misconceptions as these formed, chose the next problem from what the last answer revealed, and held the learner to a standard. Adaptive scheduling reproduces the third well, and the first two only where a wrong answer identifies the misconception unambiguously. Most wrong answers do not.
Feedback is not automatically helpful either. Kluger and DeNisi's 1996 review found that a substantial minority of feedback interventions made performance worse, usually when attention shifted from task to self. A score dashboard is exactly that kind of feedback. Deslauriers and colleagues reported in 2019 that students taught by active methods learned more while believing they had learned less, because the effort felt like failure. A teacher in the room can override that feeling. A learner alone with a screen tends to obey it.
Where software has a real advantage is bookkeeping at a scale no individual holds in memory. JupiteX has assembled 8,267 authentic JEE Main questions from papers spanning 2002 to 2025. Of the topics represented, 117 carry enough questions to describe a pattern rather than an anecdote: 48 in Physics, 41 in Chemistry, 28 in Mathematics.
A syllabus lists topics as equals. The record does not. Matrices and determinants account for 8.8 per cent of recent JEE Main Mathematics, 275 questions across the full archive. Kinematics in one and two dimensions accounts for 6.6 per cent of recent Physics, 180 questions. Coordination compounds accounts for 8.7 per cent of recent Chemistry, 171 questions. An experienced teacher knows these weights approximately, from a few cohorts and the papers that were memorable. The count is built from every paper.
Weight is not the same as return on effort, and the platform gains nothing by pretending otherwise. A heavy topic may also be one most candidates already answer correctly, where further hours buy little. Frequency data narrows an argument about where a revision week should go without closing it. Closing it takes a teacher who knows the candidate and has the counts to hand.
A second class of question is arithmetic that a classroom seldom finishes. Negative marking fixes a break-even accuracy, the point at which answering and abstaining carry the same expected value: the penalty divided by the sum of penalty and reward. For UPSC Prelims that threshold is 25 per cent. For NEET and JEE Main it is 20 per cent.
Those figures contradict a familiar piece of classroom advice. Twenty-five per cent is exactly the chance of a blind pick among four options, so guessing at UPSC Prelims is neutral in expectation. At NEET and JEE Main the threshold sits below a blind pick, which makes an uninformed answer mildly positive. A blanket instruction never to guess is wrong at all three exams, and the decision that matters concerns variance, nerve, and whether one option can be eliminated. Stating the arithmetic exactly is the platform's job. Judging a candidate's temperament is not.
Retrieval practice is the best-evidenced technique in the field. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments showed that testing oneself on material retains it far better than re-reading, even though learners predict the reverse. Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 meta-analysis found the same pattern for spacing. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing and distributed practice the only two of ten techniques with high utility.
Those findings concern timing and record keeping, which machines do better than people. No teacher with two hundred students can recall which candidate got a particular kind of problem wrong eleven days ago and is due to meet one again. A system can, and should. That is the honest split. Software keeps the record and schedules the return. The classroom supplies the explanation, the correction of a misconception while it forms, and the pressure of other people working nearby.
No platform knows that a family has moved, that a second attempt is the last one anybody will fund, or that the real obstacle is a fear of Mathematics formed at fourteen. Software cannot make a candidate sit down at seven in the morning, and has no view worth having on changing an optional subject. Those judgements belong to teachers, mentors and families, and a product claiming them is overselling.
The test of a supplement is whether it does something the classroom never could, rather than a thinner version of what the classroom already does well. Counting every question in more than two decades of papers passes that test. So does returning a candidate's own errors just before they are forgotten. A recorded lecture does not, because the live one was better. Honest positioning is largely saying which is which.
